Antwerp has a soft spot for artists. It has always been that way. As you stroll the city you’ll discover art all over the place, not just in the museums. At Modern Shapes Gallery, for example, the only art gallery in the city on the Scheldt entirely devoted to ceramics. Well worth a visit, not just for collectors, but for anyone who appreciates and loves art and design. Modern Shapes Gallery is as much a gallery as it is a curated platform. It presents five to six exhibitions a year, dedicated to both rising and established talent in ceramic art. And it presents a very personal and subtle selection of objects, often balancing on the dividing line between design, art and architecture. Founder Michaël Francken’s personal taste and unconventional passion results in a program that combines both high quality 20th century ceramic masters and contemporary artists. All bearing witness to craftsmanship and sculptural presence. As a result, Modern Shapes Gallery is a progressive and supportive space for emerging and established artists and their work.
